Physicians get a hand - from an unlikely source

Article Abstract:

Robots are being used in a number of capacities in medicine. For example, the Automated Endoscopic system for Optimal Positioning (AESOP) is a robot that holds a laparoscopic camera during surgery. In contrast to a camera held by a technician, AESOP doesn't jiggle, crowd the operating room, or get dirty. Robodoc, used in cementless hip replacement, drills a precise hole in the hip where the pin and ball of the artificial hip are placed. This precision leads to less pain, quicker recovery and fewer revisions for the patient than the manual method for making the hole.

Connecting physicians and pharmacists; new computer links may revolutionize interactions

Article Abstract:

Physicians and pharmacists are about to enter a new era in the handling of prescriptions with the advent of electronic communications via computers. The new approach holds the promise of being both an efficiency enhancer and time saver, as well as the risk of adding an additional burden when issues require clarification. A primary advantage to this approach will be the elimination of communication problems via the telephone.

Pay as you go: providers find new ways to limit the risk of investing in new equipment and technology

Article Abstract:

Suppliers are starting to make medical equipment and services available to physicians on a per-patient-per-month payment basis. That arrangement allows physicians to make new equipment and services available without assuming the financial risk of purchasing the equipment or services outright. In effect, pay-as-you-go deals are a means of extending capitation to medical suppliers.
