Please Don't Pass the Paella: Eating Disorders Upset Spain

Article Abstract:

The Education and Culture Commission of the Spanish senate has approved a report by the Senate Eating Disorders Committee on possible non-medical factors that contribute to eating disorders. After listening to 88 experts including family physicians, endocrinologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, fashion designers, schoolteachers, and elite gymnasts, the committee reports many sociocultural factors contribute to eating disorders. In Spain, about 1.5% of people between the ages of 14 and 24 have an eating disorder, and 90% are women.

Spain Leads World in Organ Donation and Transplantation

Article Abstract:

Spain has achieved a very high rate of organ donation by presuming consent from potential donors unless they have specifically refused to provide their organs upon their death. Only about 18% of families refuse donation of a loved one's organs. The rate of donation in Spain is twice that of other European countries, and more than in the US. The National Transplant Organization (ONT) is credited with promoting organ donation, educating the Spanish people, and coordinating transplantation services.
