Plasma total-homocysteine in anorexia nervosa

Article Abstract:

Plasma total-homocysteine (tHcy) was measured as a marker of folate and cobalamin levels in patients with anorexia nervosa. The study was conducted at the tertiary children's Hospital Sant Joan de Deu involving female teenagers. Findings showed that tHcy levels were substantially increased in anorexic patients compared to reference levels. Therefore, tHcy concentrations seem to be relatively high in anorexic patients most probably due to subclinical folate deficiency.

Vitamin B12 deficiency and the fortification of food with folic acid

Article Abstract:

Neural tube defects can be prevented by adding folic acid to flour, bread and breakfast foods. Diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency is prevented by high doses of folic acid, however this is not a sufficient argument for delay of public health strategies to prevent neural tube defects.
