Pollution control: 10 state programs lead the way

Article Abstract:

California, Oregon, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Iowa, New Jersey, Florida, Maryland and Connecticut have adopted environmental programs that promote economic development. The California Department of Health Services, for instance, provided 60 local companies with technical and financial support to reduce hazardous waste by 50%. Oregon's Commercial and Industrial Efficiency Incentives program offers income-tax credits to companies with energy conservation and recycling projects. Other state programs focus on forest management, waste recycling and water and food safety.

There is a growing demand for industrial hygienists from the industrial and government sectors. The demand can be attributed to the increasing number of stringent legal requirements for employers to promote the health and safety of workers and to help protect the environment. About 16% of the 25,000 hygienists in the US are working for government offices such as the EPA, the Food and Drug Administration and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.
