Polycystic ovary syndrome

Article Abstract:

Polycystic ovary syndrome is characterized by various symptoms, the most common of which are failure to ovulate and excessive hair growth. In addition, the syndrome often involves high blood levels of androgens and luteinizing hormones, and enlarged ovaries and ovarian follicles. Other symptoms may include obesity, acne, infertility, and diminished menstrual flow. Diagnosis is usually based on a combination of these hormonal and physical symptoms. Women with the syndrome often have high levels of insulin in the blood and insulin resistance. If the syndrome involves a failure to ovulate, treatment usually involves administration of antiestrogens, gonadotropins, or oral contraceptives. If the syndrome involves excessive hair growth, treatment usually involves hair removal, and administration of antiandrogens.

Article Abstract:

The case of a 17-year-old boy with a six-month history of acne that presents for the initial evaluation and treatment is described. Physical examination reveals closed and open comedones and a large number of erythematous papules and pastules of the face and upper trunk.
