Posterior mediastinal mass in a black patient with back pain

Article Abstract:

A 32-year-old black African man was admitted to the hospital with weakness, fever, and lower thoracic pain originating in the back and radiating to the epigastrium (area over the pit of the stomach). He was otherwise healthy, but a chest X-ray revealed an abnormal tissue mass at the root of the lungs, at level of the 4th and 5th vertebrae. A diagnosis of tuberculous spondylitis, a degenerative disease of the spine caused by tuberculosis, with abscess was made. Surgery was performed to remove granular tubercular lesions; anti-bacterial drugs were then administered to inhibit further infection. The patient recovered fully and was free of all symptoms after a ten-month follow-up period.
