Coitus late in pregnancy: risk of preterm rupture of amniotic sac membranes

Article Abstract:

The male superior position during sexual intercourse late in pregnancy appears to increase the risk of preterm rupture of amniotic sac membranes. Of 1,138 women aged 15 to 45, 179 had a preterm delivery with premature rupture of the amniotic sac membranes, 180 had a preterm delivery without premature rupture of the membranes, 210 had a term delivery with premature rupture of membranes and 569, the controls, went full term without premature rupturing. Sexual intercourse in the male superior position in the last four weeks of pregnancy was significantly associated with preterm delivery with premature rupture of the membranes and with preterm delivery without premature rupture of the membranes. None of five other sexual positions was associated with either premature rupture or preterm delivery. Women who had preterm premature rupture of membranes more frequently had orgasm with or without sexual intercourse in the last four weeks of pregnancy than women in the control group.

Matrix metalloproteinase 9 activity in urine of patients at risk for premature delivery
