Predictors of low CD4 count in resource-limited settings

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested using a clinical algorithm combined with a total lymphocyte count (TLC) <1200 cells/mm(super3) as a surrogate for a CD4 count less than 200 cells/mm(super3) when it is not possible to measure the CD4 count. The various TLC levels, anemia, and body mass index are evaluated and data compared with the WHO criteria to develop a more sensitive algorithm to predict CD4 counts.

Bacteremia in HIV-infected patients: short-term predictors of mortality

Article Abstract:

A history of cancer, opportunistic infections, shock, low hemoglobin levels, and resistance to therapy were risk factors for death in a study of 80 HIV patients with bacterial infections in the bloodstream. Intravenous catheters were the cause of the infection in 45% and 30% died from the infection.
