Preoperative Serum Potassium Levels and Perioperative Outcomes in Cardiac Surgery Patients

Article Abstract:

Screening patients who will be having heart surgery to see if they have low potassium levels may reduce the risk of arrhythmias during and after surgery. In a study of 2,402 patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery, 11% had an arrhythmia during surgery and half had an arrhythmia after surgery. Two percent died from some cardiac cause and 3.5% required CPR. Those with low potassium levels had twice the risk of arrhythmia and three times the risk of needing CPR. Patients scheduled for surgery who have low potassium levels should take potassium supplements.

Off- pump vs conventional coronary artery bypass grafting: early and 1- year graft patency, cost, and quality- of- life outcomes

Article Abstract:

Graft patency, clinical and quality-of-life outcomes and cost among patients, while in the hospital and at 1-year follow up are investigated. The results showed that off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) may provide complete revascularization that is durable and cost-effective.
