Prescribing drugs for children requires special considerations. Children's physiology and body composition are different from adults', so drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized and excreted at different rates. Many drugs have not been tested in children, so off-label prescribing may not be wise. Clinicians should write prescriptions clearly to prevent medication errors, and educate parents about each drug's proper administration and possible side effects to ensure compliance with the treatment regimen.

Guidelines on examining infants and children for potential heart problems in a primary care setting are presented. These guidelines include which heart sounds to target, how to locate them, important patient history details to collect, and which other body functions and measurements to evaluate. Primary providers should refer children with heart murmurs, bluish discoloration, abnormal growth patterns, or abnormal vital signs to appropriate specialists or to emergency care when appropriate.
