Can timed appointments for community staff improve care?

Article Abstract:

British nurses find it very difficult to keep appointments in the community because of other work pressures such as administrative appointments and travel restrictions. Nursing visits are often made at unsuitable and inflexible times, according to patients and carers. If the British National Health Service Patient Charter appointment standards are to be achieved, more nurses are required to care for patient needs in the community. Increased costs are anticipated if this system is to be introduced.

The woman for the job

Article Abstract:

Mary Renfrew, former director of the midwifery research programme at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit, has become professor of midwifery studies at Leeds University. Midwives welcome the fact that someone with a strong background in midwifery practice, rather than a non-midwife, has been awarded the position. She will now work both in education and research, and believes strongly that research needs to be relevant.
