Pressure area care: how much do nurses know?

Article Abstract:

British nurses do not know enough about the treatment and prevention of pressure sores. Studies show that nurses are only partially aware of the Norton and Waterlow risk assessment techniques. Very few nurses know about capillary pressure and standard mattress pressure. Nurses understand the risk factors which can cause pressure sores, such as poor circulation, although many cannot differentiate between a primary and secondary pressure sore. Hospital equipment for pressure sores is under-utilised.

Article Abstract:

The preceptorship programme of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust promotes professional competency in nursing and supports the newly-qualified individual. Participating staff are offered the opportunity to continue with their professional education and are given support and advice on an on-going basis from a nominated preceptor. Staff are encouraged to support one-another through the use of educational workshops which concentrate on professional development.

Precepts of care

Article Abstract:

Preceptorship practices are used to support newly qualified nurses, midwives and health visitors at the start of their career. The new recruit's work is supervised and monitored at frequent intervals and discussed with a preceptor, who remains open to questions and provides feedback when appropriate. Preceptorship schemes are still being formulated, but evidence from trial situations suggests that they will be very useful.
