Pressure sore prevention: the latest in beds and mattresses

Article Abstract:

Pressure sore prevention is one of the most important aspects of dealing with long-term patients, although the development of a new adjustable mattress could dramatically help reduce the incidence of sore development. The 40 million pound sterling pressure sore prevention bill for the National Health Service could be cut if there was better communication between end-users and manufacturers, according to researchers. Hospital trusts need to develop proactive strategies to assess patients for pressure sore susceptibility and provide the right equipment to prevent pressure sores developing.

Know how: alternating pressure relief

Article Abstract:

There are two main types of support equipment which are used to prevent pressure sores. One type reduces pressure on the area while the other type relieves pressure. Pressure-reducing equipment, such as alternating pressure air mattresses (APAMs) and cushions, provides low interface pressure. APAMs give the blood vessels time to refill and recovery time can take about 12 minutes. Analysis methods include measuring maximum and minimum interface pressure, measuring the average interface pressure and using a pressure relief index.
