Prevalence of alcohol-impaired driving: results from a national self-reported survey of health behaviors

Article Abstract:

States need to enact tougher programs to prevent underage drivers from driving under the influence of alcohol. Nationwide data from the 1993 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System reveal that 2.5% of all adults reported driving under the influence of alcohol some time during the month before the interview. The survey documents 123 million episodes of driving under the influence of alcohol that year and 10 million episodes occurred in people under the age of 21. Men aged 21 to 34 were most likely to engage in this behavior, followed by men aged 18 to 20.

Characteristics of Child Passenger Deaths and Injuries Involving Drinking Drivers

Article Abstract:

Many children are still being killed when they ride as passengers in cars driven by people under the influence of alcohol. Between 1985 and 1996, 5,555 children died as a result of an accident caused by a drunk driver. In 64% of the cases, the child was a passenger in the car driven by the drunk driver. Many of the children were not using seatbelts at the time. Drunk drivers were more likely than other drivers to have had a previous license suspension or conviction for driving while intoxicated.

Binge drinking and violence

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization that estimated the use of alcohol, including binge drinking responsible for 4% of the global burden of disease also found a strong connection between binge drinking and violence. Several evidence based strategies that appear to be effective in preventing binge drinking and in turn the violence such as imposing tax on beverages containing alcohols and counseling for alcohol problems, are discussed.
