Prevalence of cigarette smoking among secondary school students - Budapest, Hungary, 1995

Article Abstract:

Public health officials in Hungary are preparing an educational campaign to discourage teenagers from smoking. In a 1995 survey of 2,799 secondary school students, 35% were smokers. Forty-eight percent of 18-year-olds smoked, compared to 24% of 14-year-olds. Students whose friends, family members or teachers smoked were more likely to smoke. Smoking was also more prevalent in students in vocational programs. Forty-one percent of the students smoked an American brand of cigarettes.

Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking Among Secondary School Students--Budapest, Hungary, 1995 and 1999

Article Abstract:

About half of all secondary school students in Budapest, Hungary smoke. This was the conclusion of a 1999 survey of 2,615 students between the ages of 14 and 18. Overall, 46% were current smokers, compared to 36% in a similar survey in 1995. Women were just as likely to smoke as men. Older students were more likely to smoke than younger students, as were students at vocational/technical schools, and those with friends or family members who smoked.

Effect of ending an antitobacco youth campaign on adolescent susceptibility o cigarette smoking-Minnesota, 2002-2003

Article Abstract:

The effects of cutting Minnesota's tobacco-control funding, are analyzed with the help of a survey on Minnesota adolescents to determine their awareness of the Target Market campaign and their susceptibility to smoking. The results of these analyses underscore the need to maintain adequate funding of state antitobacco programs to prevent tobacco use among youths.
