Prevalence of hearing loss in older adults in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin

Article Abstract:

A population-based Epistemology of Hearing Loss Study was conducted to measure the prevalence of hearing loss among adults aged between 48 and 92 years, residing in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Researchers conducted hearing thresholds measurement, ostoscopic evaluation, screening tympanogram, and a questionnaire on hearing-related medical history, noise exposure, and other risk factors. The results revealed that hearing loss is a very common problem among older adults of both sexes.

Antioxidant intake and risk of incident age-related nuclear cataracts in the Beaver Dam Eye Study

Article Abstract:

The relation of antioxidants and the incidence of nuclear cataracts was examined in a short-term study. Vitamins C and E, along with 5 carotenoids were assessed at baseline in 1988-1990 and at follow-up in 1993-1995. Lutein-zeaxanthin was the only carotenoid that appeared to be associated with nuclear cataract. Vitamins C and E were inversely associated with opacities in those who had risk factors for cataracts, but the study provided weak support for the associations.

Associations between antioxidant and zinc intake and the 5-year incidence of early age-related maculopathy in the beaver dam eye study

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to examine the link between antioxidants and zinc in a population of middle-aged and older adults in Beaver Dam, WI, between 1988 and 1990. A questionnaire was administered to collect dietary information about the previous 10 years. Researchers found few cases of late age-related maculopathy (ARM), but more research is need to further study the impact of antioxidants and zinc on ARM development and progression.
