Preventing discrimination against volunteers in prophylactic HIV vaccine trials: lessons from a phase II trial

Article Abstract:

Doctors participating in clinical trials of AIDS vaccines need to protect the volunteers from discrimination if they test positive for HIV. AID vaccines can cause an uninfected person to test positive for HIV. In a survey of 247 people who had received an experimental AIDS vaccine, 63 had been tested for HIV and five tested positive. Fifty-three potentially discriminatory events happened that were directly related to the trial. However, most of the volunteers did not lose their jobs or have difficulty obtaining insurance.

Intermediate-size trials for the evaluation of HIV vaccine candidates: a workshop summary

Article Abstract:

The authors discuss what criteria and standards should be used to determine whether or not a potential AIDS vaccine should advance to Phase III drug trials. They consider measuring changes in CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes and recommend intermediate sized trials over large scale ones for better results.

Trends in antiretroviral therapy and mother-infant transmission of HIV

Article Abstract:

The annual rate of transmission of HIV infection to a fetus during pregnancy has dropped from 19.5% before 1994 to 6% since 1994, according to a study of 1,201 HIV-infected pregnant women. Of 70 women who received a protease inhibitor, none transmitted the virus to their baby.
