Primary care diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment of depression in adults

Article Abstract:

With the advent of managed care, primary health care providers may more frequently be required to identify, treat, and manage patients with depression. Characteristic signs of various types of depression or risk for suicide, appropriate screening tests, and treatment options for patients with depression are presented. Treatments may include drug therapy, electroshock therapy, or psychotherapy. Links between physical and psychological illnesses may result in many patients with depression going unidentified and untreated.

Update on pharmacologic therapies for osteoporosis

Article Abstract:

It appears that new drug therapies will expand the choices for treating patients with osteoporosis. These drugs include calcitonin nasal spray, alendronate and possibly sodium fluoride. Studies have shown these drugs to be safe and effective in some patient populations when used in combination with a program of exercise, vitamin supplements, and fracture prevention education. There have been few reported serious side effects with these therapies.

Pharmacologic approaches to chronic pain in the older adult

Article Abstract:

Clinicians should acquire an understanding of pharmacologic approaches to chronic pain in the aged and the physiologic changes associated with aging. Management of chronic pain related to conditions such as arthritis and hypertension can help reduce needless suffering, and lower health care costs. Accurate pain assessment and knowledge of appropriate interventions can help improve patients' quality of life.
