Prison deprivation and protein nutritional status of inmates of a developing community prison

Article Abstract:

A study of protein nutritional status of prison inmates in Nigeria suggests the possibility of undernourishment accompanied by lower serum proteins during an average seven-month confinement. The condition of those awaiting trial and undergoing long sentences may be worse. Researchers compared protein estimations for 42 male inmates and 28 male controls of low socioeconomic status. All measured values were lower in inmates than in controls. The government should provide proper health services for prisoners.

Infant feeding and nutritional status: the dilemma of mothers in rural Senegal

Article Abstract:

A nutritional survey of 1,174 two- to ten-month-old infants in three health clinics in the Fatick region of Senegal, West Africa, revealed that the mothers included gruel with breast-milk in feeding malnourished infants. All infants were breastfed, and supplementary food items such as millet and rice were given to infants in cases of insufficient breast-milk.
