Private functions

Article Abstract:

The British government's proposal to use private finance initiatives to fund the National Health Service is likely to degrade medical care, say critics. Many services will be managed by external companies and out of senior management jurisdiction in the event of a problem. Nursing care may be at risk if nurses work for inflexible nursing agencies. Long-term contracts may be unnecessary in certain medical situations, despite the fact that nurses would benefit from job security.

Stripped to the bone

Article Abstract:

The 1993 peace deal between Israel and the Palestinian authorities has had implications for the Palestinian Health authorities. The increasing need for health care from the expanding population is being addressed by expansion in hospital facilities. Nurses' training programs have increased within hospitals and universities. In the Gaza Strip only 30% of nurses are women; to counteract this problem positive discrimination is being used as part of admission procedures.

The service is part of the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) charity.
