Problematic variation in local institutional review of a multicenter genetic epidemiology study

Article Abstract:

Clinical trials that cover more than one hospital should be overseen by a central review board that can determine whether the research poses a risk to the patients who will participate. Otherwise, each hospital's institutional review board will do this, leading to duplicate effort, great variability in results, and increased time and expense. This was the conclusion of a survey of 31 hospitals that participated in a study of the genetics of cystic fibrosis.

Clinical, biochemical, and genetic heterogeneity in short-chain acyl-coenzyme a dehydrogenase deficiency

Article Abstract:

The genetic, biochemical, and clinical characteristics of short-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (SCADD) patients in the Netherlands and their relatives are described to explore the genotype to phenotype relation. It is observed that SCADD is far more common than assumed and clinical symptoms in SCADD are nonspecific, generally uncomplicated, often transient and not correlated with specific SCAD-encoding (ACADS) genotype.

Genetic Information, Genomic Technologies, and the Future of Drug Discovery

Article Abstract:

The sequencing of the human genome may lead to more effective drug treatments. A technique called transcript profiling allows scientists to analyze any biological system in molecular detail. Drug research in turn focuses on those molecular details to design effective drugs.
