Prognostic Value of the Admission Electrocardiogram in Acute Coronary Syndromes

Article Abstract:

Certain patterns on an ECG may predict which patients with chest pain have a high risk of heart attack. An ECG uses electrodes glued to the skin to measure the electrical activity of the heart. Researchers gave an ECG to 12,142 patients admitted to 373 hospitals in 13 countries for the treatment of chest pain. The rate of heart attack or death within 30 days was lowest in those with T-wave inversion and highest in those who had both ST-segment elevation and depression. Increased blood levels of creatine kinase also increased the risk of heart attack or death.

Association between hospital process performance and outcomes among patients with acute coronary syndromes

Article Abstract:

Assessment of quality in health care delivery plays an increasingly prominent role in contemporary medical practice and selected care processes are increasingly being used to measure hospital quality, however, data regarding the association between hospital process performance and outcomes are limited. Government agencies, professional societies, accreditation organizations, and major insurers all have published sets of performance indicators.

Risk Stratification and Therapeutic Decision Making in Acute Coronary Syndromes

Article Abstract:

Doctors are developing practice guidelines to use for patients with chest pain. The guidelines include techniques for classifying patients at high risk of heart attack and death. These patients could be given anticoagulant drugs.
