Progress treating childhood diseases creates challenges in adult care

Article Abstract:

Many more children are surviving diseases that would have killed them in the 1960's but they may still have health problems as adults. Children treated for cancer may develop chronic diseases caused by the chemotherapy or radiation they received. Hemophilia is more easily treated but hemophiliacs must still avoid risky behavior. Many hemophiliacs also contracted diseases from blood transfusions before blood was extensively tested. Children with phenylketonuria must eat a special diet for life and children with cystic fibrosis must have daily physical therapy to prevent them from developing lung disease.
