Issues are presented concerning the standard of care which should be given to elderly people requiring acute hospital care. Deficiencies in care and the factors needed to create a feeling of well being in patients are discussed.

Promoting excellence in the care of the older person: case report 1

Article Abstract:

In 1999 research to examine good practice in acute hospital care for the elderly was commissioned by Help the Aged charity. A report on the findings of Pinewood ward, Hillingdon Hospital in London is presented, with particular reference to the time and attention given to patients by nursing staff.

Excellence in the care of older people: case report 2

The work of a unit offering care for the elderly in St. James's Hospital, Leeds, is described. The varying initiatives and management skills used by the unit to provide better care are presented.
