Prophylactic thyroidectomy in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A

Article Abstract:

Total thyroidectomy was conducted on several patients who were carriers of RET mutation characteristic of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A to verify whether such a treatment could prevent or cure medullary thyroid carcinoma. Results demonstrated that patients identified to be carriers did not show sustained or recurring medullary thyroid carcinoma for five or more years after total thyroidectomy.
