Primary prophylaxis against opportunistic infections in patients with AIDS

Article Abstract:

The health and survival of AIDS patients has improved considerably since doctors began prescribing drugs to prevent the development of opportunistic infections. The incidence of Pneumocystis (P.) carinii pneumonia has dropped substantially since the introduction of oral trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for primary prophylaxis. However, many patients cannot tolerate this drug and end up switching to another. A 1995 study found that dapsone and aerosolized pentamidine may be just as effective in preventing P. carinii pneumonia in certain AIDS patients. Another study in the same year found that fluconazole can prevent cryptococcal and oral candida infections in AIDS patients. It may be prudent to recommend such treatment for patients who live in areas where cryptococcal infection is widespread. The drug's high cost may prevent its use in developing countries.

Avian influenza A (H5N1) infection in eastern Turkey in 2006

Article Abstract:

A study reports the clinical, epidemiologic, and radiologic features and history of exposure of eight patients with H5N1 virus infection cared for at Yuzuncu Yil University Hospital in Van, Turkey, between December 31, 2005 and January 10, 2006. The results suggest that H5N1, which causes a spectrum of illnesses in humans, including severe and fatal respiratory disease, could be difficult to diagnose.
