Protecting the lungs assessing the risk

Article Abstract:

Employers must predict the amount of exposure individual employees may have to hazardous airborne contaminants, in the workplace. The data from monitoring exposure should be compared with information in the UK, EH40 Occupational Exposure Limits. A more extensive study on exposure may be required when dealing with very dangerous or unpredictable substances. Employers have to decide on the level of risk, to their employees, from exposure to hazardous substances. The amount of risk will not only depend on how dangerous the contaminant is but on the level of exposure.

Pesticides

Article Abstract:

Agriculture is the most significant source of human pesticide exposure, according to the UK Pesticides Trust. Organophosphates used in sheep dipping and seed dressing and spraying are a significant problem, as are older pesticides such as organochlorines. The most toxic agricultural pesticides are fumigants and nematocides, which mainly affect humans through inhalation but can also be absorbed through the skin. Recent research indicates that there is a connection between long term health effects and handling the organophosphates used in sheep dipping.
