Protective and damaging effects of stress mediators

Article Abstract:

Physiologic responses to stress protect the body against real and perceived threats, but they can damage the body from repeated or chronic activation. Allostatic load describes the effects of prolonged overactivation or underactivation of stress-response systems. Physical threats, difficulties at home or work, trauma, worrying, helplessness and other stressors induce the release of powerful chemicals that regulate blood pressure, inflammation, cognitive functions and other physiologic processes. Chronic stress can have profound effects on disease.

Hemodynamic Shear Stress and Its Role in Atherosclerosis

Article Abstract:

Parts of blood vessels that experience low hemodynamic shear stress may be more likely to develop atherosclerosis. Doctors have known for many years that atherosclerosis tends to occur at places where a blood vessel branches into two smaller blood vessels. Blood flow in these areas is not as strong as it is at other areas. This produces less stress on the arterial wall, which seems to lead to atherosclerosis. This may occur because the changes in blood flow stimulate the production of other factors that actually cause atherosclerosis.
