Protein requirements of elderly people

Article Abstract:

Data on the protein requirements of elderly individuals show that the safe protein intake level for elderly people may be beyond the present recommendations. There is a need to reassess protein requirements among young adults in order to determine the effect of gradual aging on the protein needs of well-nourished adults. The sources of error in nitrogen balance measurement are detailed.

Protein turnover in pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Protein turnover was studied in women at 13, 24 and 35 weeks gestationusing a continuous infusion (13C) leucine technique. An increase in mean protein synthesis was observed with increasing gestation. These results validate the observation that there is substantial protein turover during pregnancy and qualifies the recommendation for increased protein requirement during gestation.
