Providers mull impact of abortion ruling

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court's Jun 29, 1992 decision upholding Pennsylvania's strict abortion law is causing much concern among health providers in the state. The law requires doctors to discuss the medical risks and other issues relating to abortion and its alternatives, as well as requiring parental consent for a minor to obtain an abortion. Opponents are concerned that these requirements will increase costs by requiring physicians to perform duties currently performed by staff members.

Banning an abortion method: now the Senate's turn

Article Abstract:

The Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, which would ban controversial second and third trimester "partial birth" abortions, passed the House of Representatives by a 2-to-1 margin on Nov 1, 1995. The procedure, which has been used in an undetermined number of abortions, involves killing the fetus during live-birth delivery. Proponents of the bill feel the procedure is unusually cruel while opponents believe the move is an effort to begin banning abortion completely.

Outlawing abortion method: veto-proof majority in House votes to prohibit late-term procedure

Article Abstract:

The House has passed, by a veto-proof margin, a bill that would forbid a controversial late-term abortion method. The method, 'partial-birth' abortion, involves the intentional killing of partially extracted fetuses. Only a few US doctors use the procedure. A number of pro-choice legislators joined pro-life legislators to pass the bill by a 288-139 margin. The medical community is divided over the issue.
