Psychoanalysis of a man with active alcoholism

Article Abstract:

The purported beneficial effects of psychoanalytic techniques in the treatment of alcoholism are evaluated. A case profile of a male alcoholic was presented, from a comprehensive history of the illness to psychoanalytic techniques and outcomes. The evolution of the patient's psychopathology was attributed to family relationships especially to the mother and difficulties encountered in separation-individuation. Psychoanalysis of alcoholics considers object relations, drive and ego disorders, self-object differentiation and gender identity.

Relapse prevention and the need for brief social interventions

Article Abstract:

The use of cognitive behavioral psychology in relapse prevention is based on developing a patient's will and social skill. This is now being contested because the process does not consider the quality of one's social network and the social factors involved in developing the habit. A community reinforcement program offers promise as an alternative treatment although it is time-consuming, expensive and labor intensive. This program can result to improved social functions although it should be refined to make its use more practical.
