Psychopathology as a predictor of disability: a population-based follow-up study in Baltimore, Maryland

Article Abstract:

Researchers conducted a study to determine if psychopathology is linked to disability. From a sample of 3,481 people interviewed for psychopathology, comorbidity, and disability, 1,920 were interviewed again. Within this sample, 168 new cases of disability were discovered. These cases were compared with the control group that had no disability. The sociodemographic factors that played a significant role were age, female gender, and less than a high school education.

On genes, individuals, society, and epidemiology

Article Abstract:

The fields of epidemiology and public health over their history have focused on different factors as potential causes of disease. Advances in high technology have resulted in more interest in learning about genes, individual behaviors and characteristics, and lifestyles. These factors have helped researchers develop new theories about genes and their role in causing disease and influencing behavior and physical activity.
