"Public health malpractice, plain and simple." (Congress' failure to enact federal antitobacco legislation)(Editorial)

Article Abstract:

Congress' failure to enact comprehensive federal antitobacco legislation in 1998 amounts to a "public health failure, plain and simple," according to former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Tobacco products clearly increase the risk of cancer, and dentists can play an important role in discouraging smoking and smokeless tobacco use. An increase in cigarette taxes reduces cigarette purchasing and discourages new smokers. The American Dental Association and dentists should actively discourage all tobacco use, and dentists should join the effort to help patients stop using tobacco.

No sex, please

Article Abstract:

The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) is trying to meet readers' demands without resorting to sexually provocative ads as 1-800-DENTIST has done. Reader surveys show that JADA ranks second among all dental publications. Readers want more coverage of practice management, innovations in restoration technology and more on esthetic dentistry. JADA has responded by expanding its Editorial Board, appointing a panel of associate editors and allowing readers to contact authors on its World Wide Web site.

Spreading the word, or the three R's

Article Abstract:

Dentists who have served on the American Dental Association's board of trustees, conference speakers, and retired dentists should be used to ensure the recommendations of the ADA's Future of Dentistry Initiative widely disseminated to dentists. Many dentists are unaware of the Surgeon General's report, Oral Health in America, which was released in May, 2000.
