Puppy love can be therapeutic, too

Article Abstract:

A Chicago organization called the Chenny Troupe hopes to prove that dogs can help rehabilitate patients. Since 1990, the organization has provided dogs to 6,000 patients in Chicago hospitals such as the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital and Care Network and Grant Hospital of Chicago. The patients learn to speak again by issuing commands to the dogs and recover function in their arms by throwing objects for the dogs to retrieve. These animal-assist programs evolved out of companion animal programs, which showed that companion animals provided many health benefits to their owners. There are approximately 2,000 animal-assist programs in the US, but there are few long-term studies to evaluate their effectiveness. The Chenny Troupe is cooperating with a researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to create such a study.

HCFA focuses on new plans for quality care

Article Abstract:

The US Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) will begin to ensure that managed care organizations that treat Medicare and Medicaid patients are meeting certain goals. HCFA is the government agency that manages Medicare and Medicaid and pays the bills. However, the agency wants to encourage managed care organizations to offer their members good preventive care services such as childhood immunizations and medical screening. These organizations will have to prove that they have offered these preventive services to most of their members if they want to remain in Medicare.
