Putting some muscle into osteoarthritis

Article Abstract:

Strengthening the thigh muscle can reduce joint pain and improve flexibility in cases of osteoarthritis in the knee. This could be helpful if diminishing of pain does not lead to overloading the diseased joint. One of the major characteristics of osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of cartilage in the joints. Research is being done to determine whether or not drugs such as tetracycline or doxycycline can slow or prevent that deterioration by inhibiting enzymes that break down collagen. It is possible that strengthening of adjacent muscles might enhance the effects of a drug.

Quadriceps weakness and osteoarthritis of the knee

Article Abstract:

Weakness of the thigh muscle may be an indicator or risk factor for osteoarthritis of the knee. In a study of 462 people age 65 or older, it was found that weakness of the thigh muscle can occur in x-ray detectable osteoarthritis before knee pain has appeared. It has generally been assumed that weakness was due to muscle atrophy which developed after pain discouraged use. The weakness may be caused by muscle dysfunction and is part of the typical progression of the disease.

Is a strong quadriceps muscle bad for a patient with knee osteoarthritis?

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine what role thigh muscle strength plays in the development of osteoarthritis in the knees. Exercise that strengthens the leg muscles was thought to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis. However, a study published in 2003 found that some patients with strong thigh muscles actually got worse.
