Quality of life following bone marrow transplant

Article Abstract:

Studies of long-term survivors of bone-marrow transplant (BMT) indicate that between 15% and 20% suffer psychological distress and low self-esteem, with adolescents and young adults being more vulnerable to psychiatric or psychological disturbance than adults or younger patients. While 22% of 126 BMT survivors questioned in one study expressed dissatisfaction with their sexual life, just one of the 23 patients questioned in another study would not undergo BMT if faced with the choice again.

Cancer, chemotherapy and pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Women and couples face a series of medical, ethical and moral dilemmas when cancer is discovered during pregnancy. Chemotherapy during the early stages of pregnancy can lead to spontaneous abortion or a failure of the foetus to develop normally. Fetal development may be impaired during the second stage of pregnancy resulting in malformation and mental retardation. Midwives need to know how to advise and care for women who are diagnosed as having cancer during pregnancy.

Psychological care in bone marrow transplantation

Patients undergoing bone marrow transplants may suffer psychologically. They and their families may be stressed by the experimental nature of some techniques. Patients may also suffer from physical and financial problems, as well as the possibility of dying. Patients in isolation feel deprived by the lack of physical contact.
