Quantitative assessment of the rheumatoid synovial microvascular bed by gadolinium-DTPA enhanced magnetic resonance imaging

Article Abstract:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhanced by an intravenous contrast agent may detect the density of small blood vessels in arthritic joints, an important diagnostic characteristic in rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers compared the microvascularity of the synovial membrane of 31 knee joints as determined by synovial biopsy and gadolinium-DTPA enhanced MRI scanning. Enhanced MRI effectively identified new blood vessel formation in the knee, confirmed in biopsy specimens. This technique may be useful in monitoring rheumatoid arthritis and determining the effect of drugs on vessel growth.

Subgroups of primary Sjogren's syndrome: Sjogren's syndrome in male and paediatric Greek patients

Article Abstract:

Few men and children have Sjogren's syndrome in Greece and those that do have different characteristics than women with this condition. Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease that affects salivary glands and the tear glands. A comparison of 12 men, 13 children and 30 adult women with SS revealed that similar symptoms occurred in all three groups, but the men were less likely to have arthritis and Raynaud's phenomenon. The men were also less likely to have autoantibodies against the cell nucleus and its components compared to the women and children.

Impaired microvascular response to cholinergic stimuli in primary Sjogren's syndrome

Article Abstract:

Patients with Sjogren's syndrome may have a dysfunctional parasympathetic nervous system, which might explain why the disease causes decreased saliva and tear production. Sjogren's syndrome is characterized mostly by dry eyes and dry mouth.
