RA law

Article Abstract:

The EC (European Community) directive on health and safety will be effective in the UK on Jan 1 1993. One of the main changes will be that employers will need to carry out risk assessment in areas, such as lifting/handling activities and VDU stations. The Health and Safety Executive believes risk assessment to be necessary to avoid accidents and illness and a way by which businesses can become more profitable. Employment Minister Patrick McLoughlin has calculated that about 600 million pounds sterling is spent by businesses in sick pay, retraining and replacement as a result of accidents and illness.

The spoils of nature

Article Abstract:

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has developed a new policy for management of the environment, encapsulated in BS 7750. This affects companies in several ways, for example in how they train management, how they investigate pollution accidents, and how they use resources generally. Companies should carry out 'green' audits, make their aims clear as to protection of the environment, and keep full records. A benefit of following the policies set out is that the public at large and the legal system are likely to view companies' activities more favourably.
