Radical overhaul

Article Abstract:

The U.K. National Health Service has undergone a period of radical restructuring in the recent past and there have been calls for the service to be led by primary care in the future. Such a process would mean that decisions on providing and purchasing health care should be carried out close to patients and that service users should be given a greater say about how services are delivered. A radical reorganization of the existing primary health care service is required if it is to reflect the wider goals of the World Health Organization.

Quality questions

Article Abstract:

Within the UK's National Health Service, quality assurance is a key element, forcing health care professionals to reappraise the way they work. The most popular, and cheapest, method of measuring quality is through patient satisfaction research, but results may be artificially uncritical and difficult to interpret. An alternative approach to understanding patients' experiences is a consumer audit which combines patients' experiences and direct observation to provide a clearer understanding of patient satisfaction.

Developing good policies for the health of pregnant workers

Article Abstract:

It is especially relevant in the United Kingdom National Health Service to prevent occupational risks in the workplace for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as 75% of employees are women. Women should alert their managers to their condition as soon as possible so that together they can work out procedures to prevent the pregnant woman being put at risk. Forms of work which may include contact with toxic drugs or some infections, as well as strenuous physical activity should be avoided.
