Rapid diagnosis and classification of hydatidiform moles with polymerase chain reaction

Article Abstract:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may be an effective method for genetic evaluation of a gestational trophoblastic disease hydatidiform mole. A hydatidiform mole is an abnormal pregnancy that results in the formation of a mass of cysts resembling a bunch of grapes in the fetal membranes. Among 20 patients with a well-characterized hydatidiform mole, seven had a partial hydatidiform mole and 13 had a complete hydatidiform mole. PCR analysis revealed that five of the partial hydatidiform moles contained genes from both parents and nine of the complete hydatidiform moles contained only the father's genes. Complete hydatidiform moles are more likely to progress to a cancerous state, so it is important to diagnose them correctly. PCR can be used to analyse small samples of tissue because it only requires a very small amount of DNA.

Cold-knife conization versus conization by the loop electrosurgical excision procedure: a randomized, prospective study

Article Abstract:

Loop electrosurgical excision appears to be as effective as cold-knife conization in treating cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). CIN is a cervical disease that may be a precursor of cervical cancer. Researchers evaluated cold-knife conization and loop electrosurgical excision in 180 women with CIN. Cold-knife conization must be done in a hospital whereas loop electrosurgical excision can be done in an outpatient clinic. Loop electrosurgical excision was just as effective as cold-knife conization and is probably considerably less expensive.

Expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase, the catalytic subunit of telomerase, is associated with the development of persistent disease in complete hydatidiform moles

Article Abstract:

If a woman with hydatidiform mole has the enzyme human telomerase reverse transcriptase in her genital tract, she may develop persistent trophoblastic disease. Hydatidiform mole is abnormal embryonic tissue that can develop into trophoblastic disease but can also undergo spontaneous remission.
