Recalcitrant oral ulcers caused by calcium channel blockers: diagnosis and treatment considerations

Article Abstract:

Dentists should ask all patients who have mouth ulcers whether they are taking any drugs. Two cases are reported of patients who had mouth ulcers that could not be treated with all known treatments. Eventually, the ulcers were linked to calcium channel blockers, which both patients were taking. When they stopped taking the drugs, the ulcers healed. This is the first known report of mouth ulcers caused by calcium channel blockers. However, the drugs are known to cause an overgrowth of gum tissue called gingival hyperplasia.
