Record of the first physician to see Henrietta Lacks at the Johns Hopkins Hospital: history of the beginning of the HeLa cell line

Article Abstract:

A doctor who worked in the clinic that maintained the first cancer cells in culture recalls the events. In the early 1950s, cervical cancer was not well understood. It was thought that culturing cancerous cells would forward research. All attempts at culturing samples taken from cervical tumors failed until Henrietta Lacks came for care. Her tumor had unusual qualities, including the ability to be cultured and, tragically, a lack of response to treatment. The cell line was named HeLa after her. The HeLa line has survived for 75 years and continues to be used in cancer research.

Serotonin transporter, tryptophan hydroxylase, and monoamine oxidase A gene polymorphisms in premenstrual dysphoric disorder

Article Abstract:

The association of common polymorphisms of key genes that control the serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) pathway with the premenstrual dysphoric disorder is investigated. The results have not supported the major role for common 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter (TPH1), and monoamine oxidase A polymorphisms in contributing to susceptibility to premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
