Article Abstract:

Psychiatric services and community care are failing the mentally ill and a policy reassessment is required. Since 1957 about 100,000 mental patients have moved from hospital to community care. However,their progress has been unmonitored. Psychiatrists have recognised patients' needs for asylum from the outside world. A retreat in hostel or group accommodation would allow opportunity for reappraisal and rehabilitation. However, the traditional idea of institutional asylums should be avoided.

Article Abstract:

The recommendations made by the Ashworth Special Hospital inquiry should extend to all psychiatric institutions. Reforms instituted by the 1983 Mental Health Act have proved inadequate for patient protection. The inquiry report maintained staff should cooperate with any management investigation. Staff should be trained in complaint investigation and procedure. Patients detained under the Mental Health Act should have an independent legal defence service to protect their interests.

Article Abstract:

A project set up to help mentally ill patients by organising them into football teams is described. The therapeutic effects of the scheme for individuals and the capacity of sports to enhance confidence and well-being are explored.
