Reducing Patient Restraint Use

Article Abstract:

A multidisciplinary team was formed to redefine policy on using patient restraints, the main goal of which was to reduce restraint use. Other goals included establishing acceptable alternatives, evaluating staff education needs, and design a means for new policy evaluation. Knowledge of the patient's condition is the primary criterion for determining the need for restraints.

Reducing restraint use in the acute care setting

Article Abstract:

A Massachusetts hospital developed a program to reduce the use of restraints on their elderly patients in acute care. The new program involved documented guidelines, staff education, and indications for restraint need. Though many surveyed nurses believed restraints were necessary to prevent falls, research has found that more serious injuries occur with restraint use.

A Case for the CNS in Acute Care

Article Abstract:

Clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), sometimes also known as nurse practitioners, need to improve hospital administrators' knowledge of their role and economic impact. Appropriate use of CNSs has reduced hospital stay, cost, readmission rates, and improved patient satisfaction. Continuing outcomes studies are necessary to prove CNSs' value.
