Reducing cardiac risk in noncardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

All patients with heart disease who will be having surgery for some other reason should receive a beta blocker before and after surgery to minimize potentially serious complications. These patients are at risk of a heart attack even if they are having surgery on some other part of the cardiovascular system. A 1999 study showed that a beta blocker given a week before and up to one month after non-cardiac surgery reduced the risk of complications in these patients by 91%. However, they all had a very high risk of a complication so the same result might not be seen in other patients.
