Reform presents no clear model for provider mix

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton is just beginning to examine the way that non-physician providers can be used to reduce the cost of health care and extend coverage to the uninsured. There is a groundswell of support for nonphysicians, given the shortage of doctors interested in primary care. The number of nonphysicians needed is, as yet, unknown, but these professionals will probably be recruited from the ranks of physicians' assistants and nurse practitioners. Some experts have advocated using nonphysician use at HMOs as a model.

Article Abstract:

M. Roy Schwarz, AMA senior VP for medical education and science, predicted future trends in medical care in a speech at a conference co-sponsored by the AMA and Society for the Directors of Research on Medical Education on Feb 28, 1992. According to Schwarz, piecemeal reforms will take the place of a comprehensive nationalized health insurance system. Europe and Japan will develop most new research technologies. Some medical schools will close, and statistics will increasingly describe physicians' performance.
