Reform report: proposals given, public concerns aired about health care overhaul

Article Abstract:

A variety of groups and individuals offered proposals, reports and suggestions pertaining to the national health reform debate. For example, the American Academy of Family Physicians released on Apr 8, 1992 a revised health reform package, which includes a provision designed to curb the unnecessary use of expensive subspecialty services. In addition, a 37-member 'House Wednesday Group,' comprised of a Republican House caucus and former Health Care Financing Administration officials, proposed that eligibility for Medicaid and other cash assistance and entitlement programs be separated from one another.

Public surveys draw opposite results on health reform

Article Abstract:

Public opinion surveys concerning health care reform produced conflicting answers, according to reports from Blue Cross and Blue Shield Assn and the Pepper Foundation. The Blues' report says that 51% oppose and 43% favor a government-run system. The Pepper Foundation reports that 60% of persons queried favored paying $50 a month to provide long-term care for all. The Pepper Foundation survey is interpreted as showing that citizens of the United States favor government-sponsored national health insurance.

Views at odds on health care reform plans

Article Abstract:

An American Medical Association survey indicates that physicians and the public hold disparate views on health care reform proposals. The Gallop Organization interviewed 1,003 physicians and 1,514 non-physicians by telephone during Jan and Feb 1992. Survey results indicate that physicians tend to favor pluralistic, market-based plans while the general public wants government-financed national health care. Additional results are discussed.
