Report details increased cost shifting by hospitals

Article Abstract:

Hospitals are increasing their charges to private patients to make up for Medicare reductions, according to a report from Lewin/ICF, consultants. Cost shifting, which grew from 11% of hospital costs in 1989 to 14% in 1991, may endanger the support of employers. Shortfall for outpatient care exceeds that for inpatients, according to the report. Congress is considering a law permitting private payers to choose Medicare rates.

Economy squeezes hospital capital improvements

Article Abstract:

Aging of hospital physical plants and changes in technology and approaches to care are forcing financially strapped hospitals to make large-scale improvements. Patients, health professionals and accreditors are increasingly demanding the latest technology and facilities. Yet, hospital structures are aging and many hospitals are unable to qualify for bank loans and have little capital reserves, if any.

Fla. panel: keep TB hospital open - but at half capacity

Article Abstract:

Florida's Tuberculosis Alternative Care Task Force has recommended downsizing A.G. Holley State Hospital rather than close one of the country's last four tuberculosis (TB) hospitals in the face of a rising TB rate. The task force also recommended the creation of half-way houses for drug, alcohol and mental health treatment of TB patients. Florida has the fourth highest number of TB cases in the US.
