Report gives facts on mental health needs of elderly

Article Abstract:

A report on mental health and aging revealed that Medicare does not pay for mental health care to the extent that it covers physical care. Medicare only reimburses for 50% of mental health care, inpatient psychiatric care for approximately 6 months and none of the medication costs. The White House Conference on Aging believes optimal mental health should be promoted and mental health care access should be provided more frequently.

AIDS vaccine: rhetoric or reality: finding a preventive vaccine within a decade is now a top national priority

Article Abstract:

There are several social, ethical and political issues that will need to be resolved if an AIDS vaccine is developed. Immunity and its implementation is an issue of primary concern in the development of a vaccine. The affordability of a vaccine for poorer countries is an issue because these areas are reporting more new infections than other regions of the world. Primary testing locations will need to be resolved.

IOM report urges stepped-up contraceptive research

Article Abstract:

A lack of commitment from government, insurers, industry, and the public could keep new and improved contraceptive methods from reaching the marketplace, according to an Institute of Medicine report. Dr. Allan Rosenfield, who chairs the institute's Committee on Contraceptive Research and Development, noted that social, political, legal, and payment issues have stalled contraceptive research since the 1960s.
