Ethical theory and principles: do they have any relevance to problems arising in everyday practice?

Article Abstract:

Two ethical scenarios are presented to illustrate the use of five ethical theories in clinical practice: deontology, consequentialism, casuistry, ethics of caring, and principilism. The ethical scenarios are an HIV-infected pregnant woman who refuses drug treatment, and a woman pregnant with quintuplets who must decided whether to abort one or more fetuses.

Resolving the clinical and ethical dilemma involved in fetal-maternal conflicts

Article Abstract:

It would be helpful for hospitals to establish ethical guidelines to handle potential situations involving pregnant women who refuse recommended medical procedures. The courts have not been consistent in favoring either the wishes of the mother or in protecting the interests of the unborn child. A hospital ethics committee presented the guidelines they have established. The process begins with a respectful discussion involving the doctor and mother or surrogate if she is incapable, followed by a meeting with the ethics committee if needed, and concluding with legal intervention only in very rare cases.
